Psychotherapy for Teens and Adults
Psychoanalytic / Psychodynamic Psychotherapy“If a new result is to have any value, it must unite elements long since known, but till then scattered and seemingly foreign to each other, and suddenly introduce order where the appearance of disorder reigned.”
— Wilfred Bion
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that aims to help individuals gain insight into unconscious thoughts and emotions that may be impacting their behavior and relationships. This approach is based on the belief that early childhood experiences and relationships shape the way people view themselves, others, and the world around them.
During psychodynamic psychotherapy, the therapist and client work together to explore the client’s thoughts, feelings, and memories, with the goal of identifying patterns of behavior that may be related to unresolved conflicts or past experiences. The therapist may help the client uncover feelings that have been repressed or suppressed, which may be contributing to the client’s difficulties in daily life.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy typically involves weekly or biweekly sessions that last 50 minutes. The therapist and client may engage in free association, where the client is encouraged to say whatever comes to mind without censoring or filtering their thoughts. The therapist may also help the client explore and understand patterns in their relationships, and how they may be related to their past experiences.
The therapist may also work with the client to develop coping skills, and to help them manage symptoms of anxiety or depression. The therapist may provide support and guidance as the client explores difficult emotions and experiences, and may help them develop new ways of thinking about themselves and their relationships.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy can be a highly effective form of therapy for individuals who are struggling with a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and unresolved trauma. With the support of a skilled therapist, clients can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences, and develop the tools they need to live more fulfilling and satisfying lives.
